Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative disease which affects and destroys the brain connections. It is the principal cause of intellectual deterioration for persons over 65 years old. However, this terrible disease can affect people as young as 40 (though they represent lees than 1% of all Alzheimer cases and are generally "hereditary" cases).

There is no cure for Alzheimer, nevertheless, if detected at an early stage, treatment can be given that helps to slow down the disease's progress, at least to some degree. Recent studies have shown that symptoms can, actually, appear as early as 10 to 13 years before the disease is diagnosed.

The following 10 warning signs are to be taken very seriously as they could indicate an Alzheimer disease and the need to have the person checked for it by a medical doctor.

1. Memory loss

People sick with Alzheimer's disease often forget recent events (someone's name, a phone number...) pertaining to their lives and those of close friends and family members.

2. Difficulty in accomplishing daily tasks

Routine tasks can become difficult. For instance, people with Alzheimer might prepare a meal and forget to serve it.

3. Language problems

People with Alzheimer tend to forget simple everyday vocabulary words and to replace them with inappropriate words.

4. Spatial and chronological orientation problems

People with Alzheimer have a blurred sense of orientation. They can forget which day of the week it is and especially get lost easily, even in familiar locations such as their own street.

5. Difficulty with abstract reasoning

Administrative formalities, finance management, writing a check, even using the phone, become difficult,

6. Loss of objects

People suffering from Alzheimer often place objects in weird places (keys in the fridge, watch in the chocolate box...) and can never find them again.

7. Judgment impairment

The capacity of evaluating situations is diminished, which results in forgotten meetings, risk taking, wearing warm clothes in summer, not going to see a doctor when seriously ill...

8. Behavior modification

People with Alzheimer tend to become depressed, worried, suspicious, irritable. The changes of mood can be very fast and apparently incoherent: from laughter to tears and to anger...

9. Lack of initiative

Alzheimer sufferers are often demotivated for everything, not only daily chores, but also activities that they used to be passionate about.

10. Change of personality

People suffering from Alzheimer sometimes become very different from who they were before and lose what used to be their personality. ...http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2085297
